Carved during the Spanish Civil War, Peter Macchiarini considered this piece his "Guernica" (after the 1937 painting by Pablo Picasso). It depicts a naked child protecting her mother, and was inspired by a Look Magazine photo of peasant women being "rounded up", and later shot, by Franco's fascist troops.
